The gas jack consists of a steel cylinder containing pressurised gas (nitrogen) and rod which slides inside a cylinder through a sealing ring.

• The signs of wear on a boot jack are easy to see. In particular, too little, too much or uneven resistance is observed.
• Similarly, worn out tailgate jacks make a creaking sound and leaking fluid is a sign of deteriorated seals. Boot jacks should be changed in pairs.
