The role of the driveshaft gaiter is to retain the grease necessary to lubricate the joints on each side of the universal joint, it is therefore a grease recipient that also plays the role of a seal. Made from rubber so that it bends with any deforming stress, it must remain watertight whatever happens. Over time, it loses its flexibility and cracks and tears appear. It then needs to be replaced as soon as possible as there is a risk of the central component braking.
